What is a Driver's Log ?

A driver's log is a record to observe and maintain the working pattern of commercial truck drivers, on a day to day basis. Drivers must record their status throughout the day in log books. Alternately, this is done electronically, using driver's log software.

The log records information such as number of work hours, number of hours driving, distance covered, as well as details on the vehicle performance. Thus, not only does the log serve as a record on the driver's working pattern, but it also serves as a reconditioning resource for the vehicle.

Federal Regulations Regarding Driver's Log

Commercial truck drivers work long hours under physically demanding conditions. Exhaustion is a major cause of human errors, resulting in accidents and fatalities. Therefore, a critical component of truck safety is ensuring that drivers get enough rest.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations calls for a commercial truck driver to log not more than 10 hours of driving, followed by at least 8 hours of rest.
